While in a West Texas prison for murder Harry Parnes had an opportunity to think. For 14 years. He hadn’t been that successful as a criminal. He resolved to live a better and more successful life. What better way than to rob a bank on impulse the day you get out?

The way most book jacket liner notes are written you were probably expecting to see something like “This book is for the serious Crime Fiction Aficionado.” Well, it's not. It’s for the Crime Fiction Aficionado with a sense of humor.

If you like books by Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen, George V. Higgins, Bud Shulberg, Damon Runyon, John D. MacDonald, you’ll probably like this book. These authors are mentioned out of deference; as a new author I am in not any way suggesting I am in the same league. That’s why this book had to have a sense of humor, as well as the traditional smattering of hard, raw dialogue, violence, and of course, a few plot twists.

Randy Cade has lived in California all his adult life, growing up in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s in Northern and Southern California along with all the great things that came with that. There was the San Francisco music scene around the Fillmore Auditorium in the 60’s, UC Berkeley and being a book publisher in the 70’s (yes, remember real books printed on paper etc.?), and a pioneer in the computer industry in the 80’s. Then comes the good part, two wonderful daughters, a great wife and adapting to the brave new digital world of computers, instant communication, cell phones, The Net, iStuff, Netflix and DirecTV.

There, all the third person stuff is out of the way, back to the first person which is the point of view that most of this novel is written in. The same will be true of parts Two and Three of the Harry Parnes Series, but only if you buy Part One. After all, it’s less than the price of a latte, less than the price of a well drink in a crappy dive bar.

Call Me Harry Crime with a sense of humor The Harry Parnes Series Book 1 edition by Randy Cade Literature Fiction eBooks

It is said that the majority of criminals are impulsive. That certainly seems to be the case with Harry Parnes. On the day he is released from prison, without any forethought whatsoever, he walks into a small town bank and robs it. Unfortunately for Harry this will set off a chain of events that run the gamut of hilarity to tragedy.

This is an engaging book that I read in one sitting. Most of the characters are somewhat quirky but decent. Actually, some of the criminals are relatively decent (but they are still capable of brutality).

The ending left me definitely anxious for the next installment. Who knows what kind of trouble Harry will involve himself in next!

Call Me Harry Crime with a sense of humor The Harry Parnes Series Book 1 edition by Randy Cade Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The only problem I had with "The Small World of Harry Parnes" is that I wanted MORE when the book concluded. I eagerly await the next part of the series. I agree with another reviewer ("kidmank") that the Mr. Cade's has a healthy dose of Elmore Leonard's pacing in his writing, and this can only be a good thing. But Cade's style is all his own. The characters came alive for me, and I forced myself to read at a slower pace than I normally do, so I wouldn't miss a nuance or a clue as to where the reader was headed next. Fine job!!!
I was some way through this book before I realsed how LOL funny it was, but don't let this put you off, this is a seriously good crime thriler that I am more than happy to recommend. Great characters and a novel theme. The best book of it's type I have read in a very long time. I can't wait for the sequel. Thank you Mr Cade.
When I read a book, I tend to visualize the story and action cinematically and The Small world of Harry Parnes has plenty of movie moments.

Pulp Fiction fans in every trailer park in the country should be glued to their s as Harry limps his way through one absurd Tarentino-esque situation after another, surrounded by a cast of characters that would make the Cohen brothers proud.

A modern day anti-hero for the AARP crowd, 63 year old Harry, worn out knees and all, takes on everything from prison transvestites to cartel leaders without missing a beat, leaving his geritol aside for booze and weed in true cinema verite fashion.

In a perfect world, Burt reynolds or Fred ward would stumble onto this series and option it for a TV or Movie franchise.
Some humor, but ofter repeated lines. Any phrase or description the author thought was impact provoking was repeated several times; Over, and Over, and Over........ You get the idea.
With the great EL now gone, I've been looking for young scribes with something resembling his vibe. This isn't smooth and effortless like EL's best, but it DOES HAVE THE VIBE. I read this in a couple of sittings and it had some of the "Unknown Man #89" feel...and that makes it feel genuine and unique, as opposed to the familiar EL clones.
Compact, gritty, fast and darkly humorous, I wanted to read the "Harry Parnes Series" as noted with this edition, however it appears this is the debut work.
Keep at it Cade, this is an hell of a fun ride for $2.99.
I think there’s a new fiction genre emerging. It’s books written by men, for men, kinda like the old Jim Harrison short stories and novels, kinda like Elmore Leonard, not quite serious or realistic. These novels and short stories are kinda trippy and filled with loony characters living on one edge or another, and all the better for it. Here’s one I liked a lot.

In his debut novel, “The Small World of Harry Parnes,” Randy Cade introduces his title character as he’s being released from a 14-year prison sentence in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico. Parnes is 63 years old and has little more to look back upon than a life of petty crime, jail, and stupidity, epitomized in his hilarious mantra never overthink things. Or, as Ted Williams once said, “If you don’t think too good, don’t think to much.”

You will roar with laughter when you learn why Harry’s been incarcerated.

Harry has left behind a cross-dressing cellmate who can fell any man with a single punch and hitchhikes into Mesa Rock [get it?] with a 19-year-old Mexican pothead studying law enforcement at the local community college. As they roll into town stoned and drunk, Harry decides to rob the local bank. No need to overthink things. Harry simply jumps out of the car and robs the bank.

Cade’s written the story in Harry’s voice, first-person, so we experience it up close and lean. That’s good, because it keeps surprisingus as the plot unfolds – or, perhaps explodes is a better word for it. And it’s funny. Parnes is such an adorable putz we don’t really have time to think of him as a hard-bitten career criminal who exploits everyone and everything he encounters. In fact, we kind of hope everything turns our for poor dumb Harry.

The only thing that got between me and the story were the typos and occasional spelling errors. This reads like a work that hadn’t been copy-edited or proofread very well, and I wish it had because I stumble over those errors. But it’s a pretty fast read, so maybe you won’t notice them as much as I did.

Cade is promising a sequel, perhaps several, and I for one look forward to learning what Harry does next.
I really got into this book. I love the fast pace and the humor level always keeps it interesting. I'd love to read part two but can't find it. I've already purchased 3 more of his titles and plan to check them all out. I think Mr. Cade will prove to be a very successful writer, and a a real breathe of fresh air in the genre.
